- Sulphaquinoxalines & other sulphonamides have a similar structure to p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) & interfere with the synthesis of nucleic acids in sensitive micro – organisms ( bacteria or coccidial cell) by blocking the conversion of PABA to the Co-enzyme dihydrofolic acid, a reduced form of folic acid , in animals dihydro-folic acid is obtained from dietary folic acid so sulphonamides do not affect host cells.
